Without a method of converting the power produced by the engine into useful thrust an aircraft would just be sitting still and creating a lot of noise and not get anywhere. In the past, all kinds of different propeller designs were tried: sometimes flat wooden blades, from one bladed counterweighted to multiple blade models rotating at various speeds.
Variable pitch propellers have a distinct advantage compared to fixed pitch models. This translates into a more fuel efficient, higher performing aircraft with much improved rate of climb and shorter takeoffs for those tight places!
STERNA was founded in 1996 and has been serving its customers in the fields of industry, transportation and aviation. The company specializes in the design and manufacturing of carbon fiber fan blades and propellers for a variety of applications.
Sterna's in-house research and development has led to several patents and certifications on its products relating to high speed railway cooling fans, wind tunnel blades and aircraft propellers. This has been established through collaboration with private businesses, universities and strategic partners.
Sterna has developed cutting edge technology and patented processes in the composite manufacturing industry. They take great pride developing, manufacturing and supplying high quality products to their customers and in exceeding their expectations of the products.
Sterna composite propellers are only made with high performance pre-preg carbon fiber materials. The blades are formed with
a once piece construction technique where the inside is hollow combined with reinforced ribs and they have an embedded nickel leading edge for protection against the odd stone.
The shank is made from one piece aluminum for strength. See image to the left.
These propellers are found on helicopters, airboats, hovercraft, trikes, gyroplanes, UAVs and LSA aircraft. Basically, for everything that needs a propeller, Sterna can be your supplier.
Specialized hardware for spinners and hubs can also be supplied by Sterna. This makes them really a one stop shop for the homebuilder.
Their website has a product selection tool which helps selection the right propeller with regards to engine power, gearbox, cruise speeds and number of blades required. The propellers are ground adjustable.
They also specializes in the development in manufacturing of many structural composite carbon fiber parts. A number of examples include: large ducted fans, cooling fan blades for electric machines, UAV / aircraft parts and composite products for all kinds of applications. Just contact the company with your requirements.
The next link shows a Toms Aviation video about the product line of STERNA propellers.
This video shows a nice Sterna Prop Review by Jim Howard of NAMPA IDAHO. His results are phenomenal compared to a Sensenich fixed pitch propeller on his aircraft.
